HOW FAR WE'VE COME // 10pm, June 2nd
At the Rachel Browne Theatre (2nd Floor, 211 Bannatyne Ave)

And this is what they call progress! Millions of years of evolution have found us - at present - alienated by work, disconnected from tangibility, removed from modes of production, from the food we eat and from the tools we use to navigate life. Communication is shaped and directed by unseen forces, algorithms, and the profit motive. This illusive program of six films and videos attempts to reflect on this, our present state in evermore modern times. New work from Canada, Australia, Mozambique and the United States.

See a Dog, Hear a Dog dir. Jesse McLean
2016 | US | 18 | video | Manitoban premiere
Taking its title from a sound design maxim and using it as a conceit to grasp the desire for connection, See a Dog, Hear a Dog probes the limits and possibilities of communication. In this liminal cinematic space, the fear of conscious machines is matched with a desire to connect with nonhuman entities. Algorithms collaborate and improvise. Dogs obey/disobey human commands, displaying their own artistry and agency in the process. Technology, from domesticated animals to algorithmic music to chat rooms, reflects human desire but has its own inventiveness. Can we ever truly communicate with a machine, with a nonhuman animal, with each other? -JM

Intelligent Finite Mortal Creatures dir. Milos Mitrovic
